đ đ California Trip Budget: Unveiling the total cost of our Family Trip
California is the land where god was working so hard to make it beautiful. You name what you would like to visit and Cali has it. Beauty comes with the cost though. So how much does it cost to experience the Golden Stateâs magical land? I am going to break down the details of our recent family trip of three from Florida to California. I had a budget of 6000 dollars and was I able to do it under it? You will get valuable insights and may find it helpful for your next Cali trip.
Our California Adventure:
We flew to San Fransisco (SFO) from Florida. We planned to cover most of the natural beauty Cali has to offer in 10 days. We still couldnât visit all of it and I bet months would be needed if you really wanna enjoy Cali. However, we were able to cover the charming Scott’s Valley and the majestic redwood forests of Big Basin followed by the awe-inspiring landscapes of Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park. To top it off, we soaked up the vibrant energy of San Francisco itself.
Rental Car: The lifesaving Tesla
I was able to get a last-minute deal on rental and I find myself lucky that I got Tesla Model 3. Here is why I recommend you think about renting a Tesla for your trip.
- The One-Pedal Driving: If you havenât tried it before then itâs hard to explain. But If I have to put it in simple terms then it breaks the car when you are not accelerating. And that feature is a game-changer, especially on those windy California roads. Reduced need for braking enhanced the smooth driving experience. Also gaining miles coming down the hills.
- Stress-Free Power & Eco-Friendly Adventure: The power and acceleration of the Tesla were exhilarating, making every drive enjoyable. Plus, knowing you’re cruising with minimal environmental impact adds a feel-good factor to the journey.
- Cost-Effective Charging: Wow, only $150 to charge for 1,700 miles? That’s incredible! The efficiency of electric vehicles truly shines through when you see the savings compared to gas-powered rentals. (My friend told me it took him almost $70 to fill the full tank for his Honda CRV. Compared to California gas prices, I will say, that EV was for sure cheaper.)
- Bonus Point: Tesla also just made us feel we were driving a luxury car and It fit perfectly with the state’s forward-thinking vibe!

The Cost Breakdown:
I had planned and budgeted under $6000 and the trip’s total cost amounted to nearly $5,100. I was happy that I was able to cover under our budget. The key is understanding where your money goes. Here’s a breakdown of our main expenses, visualized in a handy bar chart for easy reference:
- Airbnb ($2015): As the saying goes, “home is where the heart is” (and sometimes the best Wi-Fi!). Airbnb rentals accounted for a significant portion of the cost.
- Flight Tickets ($1139): Those coveted plane tickets from Florida to SFO played a big role in the overall budget.
- Rental Car (Tesla- $907): Our stylish and sustainable Tesla rental added to the experience, but of course, factored into the total cost.
- Food ($775):Â From indulging in fresh California fare to grabbing quick bites on the go, food is a necessary (and delicious!) expense.

Planning Your California Dream:
California is huge and would take months to explore. Depending on what you would like to cover in California, you should pre-plan your trip. Here are some of the tips based on my recent trip.
- Accommodation: Look for accommodation based on your and your familyâs needs. Solo travelers can be flexible but families with kids would enjoy staying in Airbnb.
- Travel Dates:Â Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) to avoid peak season pricing on flights and accommodation. We traveled in April and found it on the cheaper side and also less crowded.
- Food: We went grocery shopping and also prepared food at a few Airbnb stops. Dining out can add up quickly.
- Activities: National Parks typically have entrance fees and those are valid for 3 days. You can spread your activities over multiple days as needed.
- Donât try to cover everything and try not to get disappointed if are not able to cover everything. I did get sad that we couldnât visit a few famous spots in Sequoia and Yosemite because they were closed due to snow. But the overall trip was still wonderful.
FAQ
Planning a trip to the Golden State comes with a lot of moving partsâespecially when youâre trying to keep costs under control. To help you finalize your own itinerary, Iâve answered some of the most common questions I received about our $5,100 family road trip.
1. Is $5,100 a realistic budget for a 10-day California trip?
Yes, but it requires planning. Our budget of $5,100 for three people covered flights from Florida, a Tesla rental, and stays near major parks like Yosemite and Sequoia. You can certainly go cheaper by staying in hotels further from the parks or choosing a budget gas car, but for a “middle-ground” experience with comfort and a luxury rental, $500/day is a solid benchmark.
2. Is it worth renting an Electric Vehicle (EV) like a Tesla for a California road trip?
Absolutely. We spent only $150 on charging for 1,700 miles, which is significantly cheaper than Californiaâs high gas prices. Additionally, many hotels and National Park areas (like Yosemite) offer dedicated EV charging, making it much easier to manage than you might think. The “One-Pedal Driving” is also a lifesaver on windy mountain roads.
3. When is the cheapest time to visit California to save on costs?
We traveled in April (Spring) and found it to be the “sweet spot.” Flights and Airbnbs are generally cheaper during the shoulder seasons (AprilâMay and SeptemberâOctober) compared to the peak summer months. Youâll also deal with significantly smaller crowds at popular spots like Yosemite National Park.
4. How can I save money on food while traveling through California?
Dining out in Californiaâespecially near tourist hubsâcan easily cost $100+ per meal for a family. We saved a significant amount by grocery shopping at the start of our trip and preparing simple breakfasts and dinners at our Airbnb stops. Packing snacks and water for long drives through the National Parks is also essential for avoiding high “park prices.”
đConclusion: California on a Budget? It's Possible!
$5100 is still a lot but for 10 days of trip for three of us, I will still say it was damn good and under the $6000 budget that I had planned for. So I am happy Camper. You donât have to break the bank either, pre-plan your visits, and look for deals so that you and your family can create lasting memories without compromising your budget. I would visit back Cali.
Happy adventuring!
